Artificial Intelligence

MACHINE

MACHINE

A film about Artificial Intelligence – the most radical new technology of our time.

The film talks to world-renowned experts, the people who are creating, researching and controlling this new technology.  Story chapters address many of the key issues at stake – AI companions, the dilemma of driverless cars, autonomous warfare, targeted social media, using AI to create human super-intelligence and the very real possibility of a Robot Apocalypse.

MACHINE is directed by Justin Krook and produced by the team behind Chef’s Table.  Never Sit Still and Luxx were commissioned by FINCH to work on the 3D visualisations for the film.

The Neural Network

The opening 3D shot which establishes the Neural Network was essential to the film.  This section explains how the original neural networks were developed and visualises the structure of deep learning.

Social Media & Journalism

Huge online tech giants use artificial intelligence to monitor and track users, harvesting and manipulating data, targeting posts and advertising.  The impact this has on our lives is immeasurable and this section explores the huge scale at which these companies use and abuse information through social media and journalism platforms.

The Human Brain

Yukiyasu Kamitani received international attention in 2012, when he led a team that used functional neuroimaging to scan the brains of people as they slept, enabling them to decode the visual content of their dreams.  This section examines how these revolutionary scientists used AI in their work.

Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles will be radically different to the cars of today. With no need for a driver, this chapter explores the technology, safety and ethics behind driverless cars.

Super Intelligence

Once AI reaches an intelligence level greater than the human scientists, further developments will increasingly be developed by the AI itself.  This could become the AI runaway effect, an intelligence explosion.  Super Intelligence will evolve, possibly in a few years, perhaps never.

Dancing with the Stars

Dancing With The Stars

Dancing With The Stars

We were invited to created a complete package of show graphics for the new season of Dancing With The Stars on 10.  This was a perfect opportunity to don our sequins and tassels, dress it up with some razzle dazzle to create a glamorous and glittery package of sparkles and lens flares.

We evolved the existing DWTS brand and created hundreds of elements as part of a flexible broadcast toolkit which was used during the live broadcast.  Supporting the HD graphics, we also created 4K animations for the main stage arches and graphics for all of the screens on set.  The toolkit was broken into logical components which could be mixed and matched live during broadcast, on the stage screens, floor projections and the judges desk.   Alongside these key components, we also designed and build the judges scoring, multiple split screens, elimination moments, lower thirds, transitions, the leader board, and all assets for VIZ.

During the season, we created additional elements for theme specific episodes.  The twirl moments to introduce each dancing couple, promos for the judges teams, and unique title cards for each episode.

Node Fest Opening Titles

NODE FEST OPENING TITLES

Node Fest is Australia’s largest motion graphics conference.  For the 2017 event, Luxx teamed up with our good friends at Never Sit Still to create the opening titles.

The titles explore the journey of an idea, from concept through creation, a reflection of the lives of many attendees.  A metaphor of our daily creative experience as the basis of the sequence content.

The uphill struggle we face as an idea is formulated, then we dive deep into the dark cave of creation.  Bursting out, into the light, a tumultuous journey through capturing, rendering and finessing.  We built the environment with equipment and devices used throughout this process, resulting a saturated world filled with rich renders, reminiscent of our daily existence.

ADOBE MAKE IT 2017

Luxx and Never Sit Still joined forces to work on the opening titles for the 2017 Adobe Make It Conference, held in Sydney, Australia. We created both the identity and title sequence, along with providing direction for the conference branding.

For the titles, we focused on the speakers as the hero elements, designing each name as a unique artwork. The sequence takes you on a journey through bold, bright geometric shapes and patterns. An eclectic blend of styles which transition through, creating a seamless flow of colour and energy.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE: LIGHTING THE SAILS

Every year Sydney is transformed into a magical world for the annual Vivid Festival. The highlight of the event is Lighting the Sails, when the Sydney Opera House is transformed into a huge canvas for incredible light projections.

Luxx were extremely privileged to be invited by Spinifex Group to contribute visuals for the 2017 event, Audio Creatures. Working closely with the awe-inspiring Sydney Director Ash Bolland and paired with tailor-made soundscapes by Brazil’s foremost sound designer Amon Tobin.

Luxx teamed up with the talented crew at Never Sit Still and dove deep to realise Bolland’s vision of immense creatures.  Reminiscent of deep ocean life, exotic flora and alien ecosystems which consume the Opera House in a world of colour and light, transporting onlookers through a visceral and magical world.

Creative Cloud Dragon

Adobe Creative Cloud Launch China

ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD LAUNCH CHINA

For the launch of Adobe Creative Cloud in China, we were asked to animate the illustration of a Chinese Dragon by Brian Yap.

The highly detailed illustration was made with Adobe Illustrator from thousands of strokes. Our challenge was to bring the dragon to life in a 20 second animation, creating that moment of impact when the Creative Cloud was announced for the very first time in China.

To animate the dragon, we converted the layered illustration to a flattened file we could work with in Adobe Photoshop to cut out all the parts of the dragon. Then we used Cinema 4D for rigging and animation, along with the clouds. We created the cel animation of the fire in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects was used for final compositing.

The Adobe CREATE NOW event took place at the Shanghai International Convention Center on November 10, 2016.

ADOBE MAKE IT 2016

Adobe approached us to create the opening titles for their annual creative conference, Make It, which took place at Carriageworks in Sydney on May 5, 2016.

The main imagery for the event was created as an isometric illustration by Shaivalini Kumar, an artist from New Dehli, India.

Luxx worked alongside the fabulous Mike Tosetto and we rebuilt all the elements in 3D, then rendered the scene using global illumination, a process that simulates light bouncing and colour bleeding. This technique gave us a highly stylised look, with the bright colours illuminating the scene.

Hoyts

Hoyts Cinema: Lux ID

HOYTS CINEMA: LUX

Collaborating with the good chaps over at Kin Things, we worked together to produce the ID for Hoyts Cinema Premium Experience Lux. The foundation of the existing Hoyts brand centres around the hexagon, we used this shape as a principal element throughout the ID.

Combining elegant camera moves with slick rendering, resulted in an identity which reflected the luxurious experience that patrons enjoy.
